Department of Urban Development Introduction

The Department is also responsible for planning and regularization of unauthorized colonies. A special administrative unit for development of unauthorized colonies has been created in the department. The functions of this unit are to disseminate information, and formulate policy for coordinated planning of unauthorized colonies. This unit also releases funds to the various utilities for development of infrastructure in the colonies as permitted by the Delhi Govt. in pursuance to the court orders to ensure healthy and hygienic conditions.

The Urban Dev. Deptt. is the nodal deptt. for disaster management with special reference to possible incidence of earthquake in Delhi for co-ordinating with other agencies. The Govt. of India has constituted a committee under the Chairmanship of Chief Secretary to oversee both pre-disaster precautions, post-disaster managment and also relief and rescue operations. For this purpose GNCTD has set up three Disaster Management Centres under the concerned DCPs of the area at Laxmi Nagar, Nehru Place and Rohini. Department of Science and Technology has evolved comprehensive proposal for microzonation of Delhi by involving various organizations. The project has two posts i.e. Seismic Microzonation and GIS barred solutions for disaster management of Delhi region. Now Principal Secretary (Home) GNCTD has become nodal officer.

The Urban Development Department through Delhi Jal Board and other agencies publicises the importance of water conservation by adopting simple but effective methods.

The Department also aim at improving the condition of the urban poor through implementation of the following Urban Poverty Alleviation programmes:-

  1. The Urban Basic Services (UBS) Programme which was initially starte by the. Government of Delhi with a funding pattern of 40:40:20 by the State Government, UNICEF and Government of India, contributes to the social development of urban poor through the principle of community participation. Convergence, cost effectiveness, continuity with focus on child and mother through multi sectoral approach and external linkages in the areas of health, water supply, sanitation, education etc.
  2. .Swarn Jayanti Shahari Rojgar Yojna, a Centrally sponsored scheme, funded by Government of India and Delhi Government aims at economic upliftment of the urban poor through training and provision of funds for self-employment.
